Subject: Schillinger competition
Dear daniel
I'm delighted to tell you that we have decided to award you joint
first prize and that your composition will be performed on the 20th
May at the University of Hertfordshire. I particularly appreciated
your rigorous score and the flowing sweetness of your music,
structurally very solid but fluid and free sounding. It goes to show
that Schillinger techniques can be used to produce whatever the
composer intends. Your composition makes a nice contrast to the other
winner, a composition by Stace Constantinu, who has written a more
motoric and gritty score reminiscent of a minimalist style.
Thanks for all your hard work. We will record the concert and we will
send you a CD in due course.
Best wishes and congratulations
Jeremy Arden
The Schillinger School of Music
The Schillinger System of Musical Composition, named after it creator Joseph Schillinger (1895-1943),
is a method of musical composition based on mathematical processes found in nature
(repeated geometric figures such as the pinwheel in a snails shell or snowflakes for example,
or mathmatical reoccurences in number schemes found in flower petal leafs etc.)
It comprises theories of rhythm, harmony, melody, counterpoint, form, and orchestration.
The Composer has found more people discussing the System and arguing or debating its worth than actually putting it
to good use in a worthy composition of value. Though vigorous discussions can be stimulating and engaging,
the real value lies
in the value of the art generated from it, through it, or positively influenced by it.
The Composer has instead, respectfully moved past these discussions opting instead to
make an effort to actually compose music of value using the system as was originally intended by it's
creator, Joseph Schillinger.
